United Way 101
What is United Way?
United Way is a local organization that helps people right here in our community.
United Way is a local organization that helps people right here in our community.
United Way of Champaign County's Community Report documents, in one location, an overview of data representing the human condition in our local community.
Last year 211 team members fielded more than 20 million calls nationally, connecting struggling people with essential resources to solve their health care, housing, and food problems. From the first hello, 211 team members offered comfort and hope.
As one 211 specialist, Mercy Magu, said:
“People who contact 211 want someone who can listen to them, provide them with resources, and assist them to keep hope alive.”
In his 1963 book “Strength to Love,” Martin Luther King Jr. wrote: “The ultimate measure of a man is … where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”
Following a year of great unrest and strife, it’s critical that we take the time to learn with and from each other. Join thousands of your neighbors across Illinois for the United Way of Illinois Equity Challenge. We’ll learn about inequality and systemic racism in 21 weekly lessons.
The self-guided learning journey examines the history and impact of racism, and how it has shaped people’s lives. The experience will deepen understanding and help launch what we hope will be a lifelong commitment to improving equity and inclusion.
Filling out the census is an important civic responsibility and a great way to support our community. That’s why United Way of Champaign County is participating in a national initiative called United We Count, United We Vote, a non-partisan effort to increase participation in the census and voting.
We have heavy hearts. Our country and community are grieving. Most of us can’t begin to imagine the pain that the families of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and so many others have felt as a result of injustice and systemic racism. It is racism that inhibits the ability to create community change.
ALICE, an acronym for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed, is a new way of defining and understanding the struggles of households that earn above the Federal Poverty Level, but not enough to afford a bare-bones household budget.
For far too many families, the cost of living outpaces what they earn. These households struggle to manage even their most basic needs - housing, food, transportation, child care, health care, and necessary technology.
